FABLES – The Tortoise and The Hare

FABLES – The Tortoise and The Hare

The story of "The Tortoise and the Hare" is one of Aesop's fables. This story relates how a boastful hare challenges a slow tortoise to a race only to lose the race because he takes a nap in the middle of the race. The story famously ends with the lines, "Slow and steady wins the race’’.  It will be challenging for students to write their own fable using their own imagination and creativity. To ease the students burden I suggest graphic organiser is the best way to lead them in the writing process.

How to write a Fable Graphic Organiser

1. Create  heading on the top of the paper: "Fable Graphic Organizer." Then Centre the page title.

2. Skip two lines down on your paper. Along the left margin of the paper, create the next heading:"Title." Directly to the right of this heading is where the title of the fable should be written.

3. Skip one line after the title heading and create a heading along the left margin that reads "Characters." Leave four or five lines below this heading to give room to list and provide information about several characters that exist in the story.

4.  Create another title heading: "Setting." discuss the various elements of the setting in this area, including place and time, so it is important to leave several spaces beneath the heading.

5. Create the next heading: "Plot." When discussing plot you must list the various events in the story in chronological order : "The action begins when," "Then," "Next," "After that," and "The story ends when."

6 . Create the final heading: "Moral." One of the main characteristics that distinguish fables from other genres of writing is that they teach a moral within the story, so it is important that this area of the graphic organizer is provided.

7. After the graphic organiser is prepared then students can start filling in the details and the journey of writing their own fable shall begin. Teacher should be very helpful during these processes.
